FanExpo Toronto Tron Display

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 31 - 2009

There was a special booth at the FanExpo in Toronto sponsored by Disney specifically for the promotion of the upcoming Tron Legacy.

Clearly the producers who made an appearance and offered a 15 minute sneak peek at select scenes of the as-yet-to-be-completed film were completely unaware that the die hards don’t treat Friday as critical attendance. So… I missed it.

But I did get some nice shots of the lightcycle they had on display including my very own sidekick and boothbabe Mindy.

I asked around to find out what I missed, and I was told that they really didn’t say much about the plot or if Bridges was the badguy now or what the deal was.

Which of course only made me even MORE interested.

Fan Expo Costumes and Floor Coverage Part 1

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 31 - 2009

FanExpo 2009 was a hell of a lot of fun. We met a LOT of people, touched base with old friends and cruised the Con floor like tourists snapping shots everytime something caught our eye.

The Lineup to get in. At 11am the hall was already at capacity and they were declining entrance. A first for FanExpo. This was one of two main entrances into the hall. The other line was just as long.

Forgotten Fridays - Oscar

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 28 - 2009

Thanks for checking out our Forgotten Fridays feature. This is a feature to review some older films that maybe you have forgotten about or maybe never got around to seeing that we just want to share. They may not be old, maybe not forgotten, but they are not new. Just fun to share.

Today’s review is Oscar

Action star and pop culture icon of the 80s Sylvester Stallone surprised the hell out of me nailing this brilliant comedy. This is one damned funny movie that doesn’t fail to give laugh after laugh. It makes me wonder why Stallone didn’t do more straight comedies.

Release: April 26, 1991
Genre: Comedy
Director: John Landis
Staring: Sylvester Stallone, Ornella Muti, Don Ameche, Peter Riegert, Tim Curry, Vincent Spano, Marisa Tomei, Elizabeth Barondes

THE GENERAL IDEA

Angelo “Snaps” Provolone made his dying father a promise on his deathbed: he would leave the world of crime and become an honest businessman. Despite having no experience in making money in a legal fashion, Snaps sets about to keep his promise. He is faced with numerous problems: henchmen who know nothing but crime, the police who are convinced he is hatching a master plan, and Oscar, who has just got his daughter pregnant.

THE GOOD

EVERYTHING. Seriously.

The characters are all a joy. Masterfully played out stereotypes that are fun to see dance about in this ballet of laughs. At the time this came out, the closest anyone thought of Stallone in a comedy was Tango and Cash, so like many people I was hesitant.

Everyone plays their part so well that I can’t tell you who my favourite is. Every time a new scene comes on with another character - that’s my new favourite. Marisa Tomei is beautiful as always, and Ornella Muti is so beautiful. As is their other daughter (Elizabeth Barondes). The one that isn’t Lisa. (that line is so funny - you will thank me later) And Tim Curry is so good I have run out of adjectives.

Dear God this is a funny movie, and Stallone is brilliant in it. But the REAL comedy masters were the writers. Each scene steps so perfectly into the next scene, and there is SO much going on and all of it is funny. The amazing part is that you can keep up. Its not hard. Unless you missed a scene cleaning up the soda that just came out of your nose.

THE BAD

Don’t go pee. If you do, make everyone suffer your absence on pause. Don’t miss a scene. Catching up on this whole intricate mess is so finely woven that if one thread is out of place its all you will see. You will miss out on the awesome interaction of characters trying to figure out what happened.

OVERALL

This is the kind of movie that makes you want to clap in the theater when its over. You might forget to exhale as it goes along so remind yourself every now and then that laughing does require oxygen.

I am going to introduce a new rating system for my Forgotten Fridays picks.

Since all of these Forgotten Friday reviews are going to be what I would already give a high rating to, I had a Tv, Rent or Buy scale going on, but it would seem that an overwhelming majority of my picks get a BUY rating.

So with every Forgotten Friday you see from now on, you get to rate your anticipation for yourself!

TV - If you are at least a little curious, catch it if it comes on TV.
Rent - If it is something you have heard of and forgotten, or just remember enjoying this as much as I did once upon a time, go rent it.
Buy - But if you are like me, and you agree with my review you should go buy it. If its featured here, I already have.

John Lasseter talks Definitive Toy Story Collection Toys

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 27 - 2009

John Lasseter is taking fans behind-the-scenes of the new Toy Story Definitive toy line in an ongoing Youtube 7 part series and we have the first installment here for you.

I watch this and I am conflicted. I really think that Lasseter is being genuine in his love for these characters and how he was impacted when he saw other children loving them just as “Andy” would have in the movie. That’s very genuine, but I get conflicted when I hear him say “Buy two!!” because thats what he is going to do.

Lasseter is not going to “buy” anything. I guarantee you that the manufacturer of these toys are going to just give him as many of them as he wants.

That part to me sounds a little commercial and trying to sell you on the toys instead of sharing why they made this new toyline (which is obviously to sell, so I want to hear the other side of it) I hope in future installments of this feature he reels it in a little and just talks about the characters and the authentic packaging and stuff. Stop selling it.

Cloverfield 2 Teaser Online

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 27 - 2009

Cloverfield was a big mixed bag for me. I liked the film just fine, wasn’t in love with the monster but I kind of liked how it was removed from sight for us just as it was for the characters involved. We only saw it when they did, which was cool.

But the most amazing thing I liked about Cloverfield was the marketing. In this internet age its hard to keep a secret, and Cloverfield did that really well. The internet was all the buzz trying to figure it all out and mesh together all the tie in marketing, websites, posters and teasers.

I still have a Slusho T-shirt. And I didn’t see one image of the Cloverfield monster until well AFTER the film came out. With this giant spoiler machine called the internet I was amazed that happened.

Well news of a Cloverfield 2 seems to be leaking its way and the first teaser video has hit the tubes of you.

2012 Japanese Trailer Online

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 27 - 2009

I am really looking forward to the disaster movie 2012, and I actually like the new Japanese release of the trailer better than the splodey eyecandy American release.

This trailer seems to focus more on the people in the story instead of just 90 minutes of effects shots of the world tearing itself apart (because Nostradamous says so - or didn’t say, which is more to the point)

The movie was pushed back to release on Friday November 13th.

Shane Acker’s 9 Featurette Online

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 27 - 2009

If you haven’t already got the jones for Shane Acker’s 9, you really need to watch the trailers. There is no way I am letting ANYONE I know live another day without being exposed to this film. I am so eager to see it.

So when I saw this little featurette online I just had to share it with you.

The character voices they brought into the previously silent characters look great.

I think that Elijah Wood says it best. Incredible.

Rampage is NOT BA in the A-Team

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 27 - 2009

While people were moaning about the impossible story that Megan Fox would be Catwoman, the very same rag that put out that story is now reporting that MMA fighter Quinton Rampage Jackson was signed on to play BA Baracus in The A-Team.

This is NOT TRUE.

Worst Previews shares:

One rumor that the paper spread is that UFC champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson” has been cast as BA Baracus in the upcoming “A-Team” movie. The man is a beast and is no stranger to wearing chains around his neck. He seems like a good fit, but since The Sun started the rumor, this information had to be double checked.

MTV News got in touch with Jackson’s manager, who revealed that there is no truth to the rumor..

I know a lot of people get confused over here because some legitmate news sources come from the Canadian chain of newspapers called the Sun (Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver etc) but the Sun from the UK is widely accepted as a Tabloid. Not a news source.

And these last few days they have been sending up flares that shine the light of reality on just how little they care if a story makes sense or not.

Not saying that Rampage COUDLN’T get cast as BA, but once again the “news” they offer is quickly challenged and proven inaccurate.

Personally, I hope they approach A-Team with some maturity instead of just hiring some fluff non-actors to fill the roles of these TV stars. Just because Mr.T was a character personality more than an actor doesn’t mean they have to recruit some popular non-actor name for his role. Rampage physically fits the role, but I would prefer an actor who fits the physical side too.

A-Team is a great premise, and as a feature film could kick a variety of ass. I just hope they treat it with some respect and the film won’t be unintentional comedy.

Hire an actor.

Pandorum Animated Poster Online

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 27 - 2009

The animated poster gimmick is all the rage and Pandorum is the next film to jump on that bandwagon with its animated poster. I hadn’t heard of Pandorum, so Dread Central was a good place to find the synopsis:

Christian Alvart’s Pandorum follows a young crew member who awakens from his hyper sleep chamber to discover he’s alone on a massive spaceship. He ventures toward the bridge in search of others and to try and figure out what happened. Things do not go well from there.

Anyways check out the neato animated poster that will be surfacing in those LCD poster boxes.

I like the idea of an animated poster, however I prefer the ones that look like a static poster and then trick you when something movies or a character blinks or something.

Delgo may yet Sue Avatar

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 26 - 2009

With the highly anticipated Avatar finally showing its footage this summer, the comparisons to the failed animated Delgo were fast to make it around the net.

Now it seems that the producers of Delgo are in fact considering their legal options and might just sue James Cameron’s Avatar.

Worst Previews quotes:

Fathom has been bombarded with emails on the topic and have now released a statement that says that the studio may actually consider suing. “From what we have seen, we are amazed by the visual similarities between the two films and we are reviewing what legal options may be available to us,” said the statement.

Now while it has been pointed out that Avatar was in development in 1996 and was to be the film that would be James Cameron’s followup to Titanic (which Ironically it is). There seems to be some proof that Cameron’s Avatar predates the 1998 birth of Delgo.

However Cameron’s team started working on the visuals and production began after a script rewrite in 2006.

They may just have a case here if the courts deem there is enough similarities.

And it may be the only way that Delgo could recoup some of its money after the $40million film raked in an embarassing $700,000 take at the boxoffice.

Whip It Poster Online

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 26 - 2009

A poster for Drew Barrymore’s Whip It is online. The film features the rebellious young Ellen Page as a girl who is forced into feminine pastimes until she discovers the wild world of Roller Derby.

The poster isn’t anything special. It just showcases the main character in her Rolly Derby gear. But the film itself remains high on my anticipation list.

Unused Inglorious Basterds Poster Online

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 26 - 2009

Inglorious Basterds had some really great posters out during its publicity run, however today we trip over a poster they chose NOT to use.

I really like this painted style, and it reminds me of old Indiana Jones posters or Star Wars. Maybe a little Big Trouble Little China.

However as much as I like the poster, I am glad they didn’t use it. I think the existing posters fit the look and feel of the trailers much better.

Redband Bitch Slap Trailer Online

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 26 - 2009

There is no movie that HAS to be rated R, however there are plenty that we would just prefer better if they were.

Bitchslap is one of them, so its about time we get a Redband Trailer for the film that stars the Anniversary’s Erin Cummings and Julia Voth.

Bitch Slap will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Trucker Trailer Online

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 26 - 2009

A new film that made the circuit on the Tribeca Film festival and will soon see a release. Michelle Monaghan stars in Trucker.

The film stars Michelle Monaghan, Nathan Fillion, Benjamin Bratt, Jimmy Bennett and Joey Lauren Adams and follows the story of a brash woman making a living as a trucker, who’s son gets dropped in her lap after she left her husband and him a decade earlier.

There is a level of appeal here for me as often the “discarded kid” finds a relationship with an estranged parent, and it is the KID who is resisting the parent who is eager to get to know their child. This is a nice play on that.

Monaghan’s character is flawed. Very flawed. And to see a reunion play out like this looks interesting.

My father was a long haul truck driver right up until my early teens, and while we already had a good relationship, I can relate to the experience of going on long hauls with him. He would take me with him on trips and spending days together in the cab of his truck was a bonding experience. One this character will be forced to endure and grow from.

Bring on the Chihuanahs!

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 26 - 2009

Giant monster thrillers are so passe. So why not make a movie out of TINY monsters! And what is more terrifying than a Chihuaha? Those big round eyes and narrow bodies just scream terror!

And as if that isn’t scary enough, someone made the brilliant idea to combine them with piranahs, the viscious miniscule meat eater of the seas. Which brings us to Chihuanhas!

Screen Junkies says:

Chihuanhas is an actual movie that’s headed into production. The film’s concept combines the two most vicious creatures on the planet; the Chihuaha and the pirahna, of course, and unleashes them on unsuspecting campers

The idea is just silly enough that it could work. check out the concept art.

Imagine a hurd of these things lunging at you, killing you one bite sized brownie at time.

Brilliant.

The Next District 9 may be a Prequel?

Posted by Rodney Brazeau On August - 25 - 2009

Rumour is already a buzz with Neill Blomkamp’s success that a sequel to District 9 is a complete possibility. But in a recent Audio Interview Neill says he would like to explore a prequel instead.

MovieWeb offers:

Blomkamp stated that there wasn’t an official story for a new film yet, but indicated that the studio was certainly interested in a sequel. The director also talked about making the new film a prequel versus a sequel

While District 9 is getting a lot of good reviews and Blomkamp has proven his teeth to officially be cut, I really hope they don’t do another film of the same kind.

Also, I wanted to share one thought. M. Night Shyamalan.

Though his films were diverse in content and themes, after Sixth Sense you could always predict a Twist at some point. After he did it twice you watch his films trying to FIND the twist, which for me took something away from his films.

Anyways, it would be a good idea for Blomkamp to move on with another film that isn’t District 9. Quite possibly not even sci-fi (some speculate that they will pursue Halo again.. I don’t see that happening)

But putting ALL that aside, and regardless of the film or director. I am just so sick of PREQUELS! They seem all the rage right now and sometimes they work, but mostly because you know where the overall story is going. Its really difficult to make a sequel that is better than the first movie, but even HARDER to make a prequel that grabs you as much as the first.

So, now considering it could possibly be a prequel, does that make you more interested or less?
